Juanjo has had the sort of life that most book-lovers would envy. His great-aunt set up Libreria Felipa in 1920 and, given that she didn’t have children, her nephew, Juanjo’s father, helped her out and eventually took over the business. So from a young age Juanjo was surrounded by everything book-related. He tells me that back when his great aunt was in the book business (she started her first job in a book shop at the tender age of 12), editions weren’t fixed and new chapters would often be stitched into text books as needed by each student. “New books didn’t exist back then,” Juanjo explains. “They were all restored, re-stitched and sold on.” Her legacy lives on in a plaque honouring Felipa which was unveiled in 2018 on calle Libreros, near Gran Via, where her first book shop was founded.
Juanjo himself is proud to carry on the family tradition and has noticed that after the boom in Kindle sales around 2005, people are coming back to the physical book format. He’s also recently seen that people have been keen to buy novels based on historical facts. He points out that “books are a great way to disconnect the mind but you also have to concentrate and be in the moment to follow the plot.” His favourite author is Joaquín M. Barreiro, who is also a close friend of the bookseller. Libreria Felipa also hosts special events such as the “Madrid De Los Libros” on the evening of 13 November to celebrate the International Day of the Bookseller.
And as to the barrio of La Guindalera, Juanjo only has positive things to say, having known the area since the 1960s when the few building developments where interspersed with green fields. “It’s such a humble and tranquil district, given it’s so close to the more busy and built-up area of Salamanca.”
Libreria Felipa - Cien Años de Aptitud
Juanjo ha vivido un estilo de vida que dará envidia a la mayoría de los bibliófilos. Su tía abuela fundó Libreria Felipa en 1920 y, como no tenía hijos, le ayudó el padre de Juanjo (su sobrino) y luego este mismo lo heredó el negocio. Así que desde muy pequeño Junajo creció en un entorno de libros. Su tía abuela empezó a trabajar con solo 12 años y me comenta que en esta época no había libros nuevos sino libros de recuperación y restauración. “No había libros nuevos como ahora,” me explica Juanjo. “Lo que hacían era restaurar y recuperar libros incluso se cosían textos nuevos, de medicina o lo que sea para el estudiante, a medida.” Ya han inaugurado una placa de homenaje a la librería ‘La Felipa’ en la calle Libreros, muy cerca a Gran Vía, donde se fundó su primera librería.
Junajo se siente orgulloso de continuar con la tradición de la familia y ha notado que después del boom de los Kindles etc en los años 2005-2008, la gente se está volviendo al formato libro tradicional. Dice que últimamente la gente está comprando más novelas basadas en hechos reales. Dice que los libros son “muy de meditación, son una buena manera de desconectar la mente pero al mismo tiempo hay que estar presente para entenderlo.” Su autor preferido es Joaquín M. Barreiro, quien también es un gran amigo. Librería Felipa también celebra eventos especiales como el Día Internacional de Los Libreros, el 13 Noviembre que se enfocará en 'Madrid De Los Libros' este año.
Y con respecto al barrio de La Guindalera, Juanjo es un gran fan y lo ha conocido desde los años 1960s cuando había pocos edificios y mucho campo verde. “Es un barrio muy humilde y tranquilo, teniendo en cuenta su proximidad al distrito de Salamanca.”
