“I always say that you can’t cure a patient unless you really speak with them, look them in the eyes and listen carefully to what they’re telling you. Sometimes loneliness or sadness can be the root cause of symptoms,” Belen remarks from the beautifully renovated premises of Farmacia Alonso Heredia. The Pharmacy dates back over 100 years and Belen is keen to get a plaque from the Town Council to commemorate the fact. “We’ve put all the original wooden and marble fittings from inside in storage with the hope of being able to use them in the future,” she explains. Amazingly the renovations were carried out while the pharmacy remained open, for the most part, moving around the space as it became available and even serving clients from the window at one point! Belen took over this pharmacy in December 2020, having lived with her husband in The Hague when the license became available. Prior to that Belen had worked for a number of years in pharmacies in the UK in the East Midlands towns of Nottingham, Scunthorpe and Spilsby.
Although the Pharmacy now has a new owner, that doesn’t mean all ties with the past have been cut. There is still a strong connection with Fernanda who used to run the place up until her retirement last year. “Fernanda is the soul of the place, she’s the one who gave it character, built up trust, professionalism and, ultimately, its success. I always say I’m going to put up an altar to her in here! She brought such an incredible humanity to the place.” And this connection with the past is also evident in the way clients interact with Belen, Patricia and Merce, her two colleagues. The banter and confidences that are shared show how quickly and easily Belen and her team have been accepted into the heart of the community. “We’ve noticed how much people adore Guindalera and they try to help us loads! One woman brings us cheese, another coffee or birthday cake and others come to buy things they don’t really need, just to support local businesses. It’s so lovely! I’ve had nuns tell me that they pray for me at mass! It’s a lovely feeling and I want to do all I can for them,” Belen says.
And part of Belen’s plan is to try and become a small health centre to take the burden off GPs. She takes clients blood pressure and does cholesterol readings. She’s also a specialist in natural medicine, aiming to prevent serious illnesses or reduce bad side-effects of medicine. The Pharmacy also offers a home delivery service and intends to launch a Personalised Dosage System whereby clients can receive their medicine carefully customized in a segmented box to allow the patient to see if that day’s medicine has been taken or not.
It’s really lovely to welcome new business owners to the neighbourhood, especially when they are carrying on the long tradition of care and friendliness that so personifies La Guindalera. ¡Bienvenidos!
“Siempre digo que no se puede curar a un paciente a menos que realmente hable con él, lo mire a los ojos y escuche con atención lo que le está diciendo. A veces, la soledad o la tristeza pueden ser la causa fundamental de los síntomas”, comenta Belén desde las instalaciones bellamente renovadas de Farmacia Alonso Heredia. La farmacia tiene más de 100 años y Belén quiere obtener una placa del Ayuntamiento para conmemorar el hecho. "Hemos almacenado todos los muebles originales de madera y mármol del interior con la esperanza de poder usarlos en el futuro", explica. Sorprendentemente, las renovaciones se llevaron a cabo mientras la farmacia permanecía abierta, en su mayor parte, moviéndose por el espacio a medida que estaba disponible e incluso atendiendo a los clientes desde la ventana en un momento. Belén se hizo cargo de esta farmacia en diciembre de 2020, después de haber vivido con su marido en La Haya. Antes de eso, Belén había trabajado durante varios años en farmacias en el Reino Unido en las ciudades de Nottingham, Scunthorpe y Spilsby en East Midlands.
Aunque la farmacia ahora tiene un nuevo propietario, eso no significa que se hayan cortado todos los vínculos con el pasado. Todavía hay una fuerte conexión con Fernanda, quien solía dirigir el lugar hasta su jubilación el año pasado. “Fernanda es el alma del lugar, ella es quien le dio carácter, le generó confianza, profesionalismo y, en definitiva, su éxito. ¡Siempre digo que le voy a poner un altar aquí! Ella trajo una humanidad tan increíble al lugar ". Y esta conexión con el pasado también es evidente en la forma en que los clientes interactúan con Belén, Patricia y Merce, sus dos colegas. Las bromas y las confidencias que se comparten muestran la rapidez y la facilidad con que Belén y su equipo han sido aceptados en el corazón de la comunidad. “¡Hemos notado que la gente adora a Guindalera y tratan de ayudarnos muchísimo! Una mujer nos trae queso, otra café o pastel de cumpleaños y otras vienen a comprar cosas que realmente no necesitan, sólo para apoyar a las empresas locales. ¡Es tan encantador! ¡Algunas monjas me han dicho que rezan por mí en la misa! Es una sensación encantadora y quiero hacer todo lo que pueda por ellos ”, dice Belén.
Y parte del plan de Belén es intentar convertirse en un pequeño centro de salud para aliviar la carga de los médicos de cabecera. Ella toma la presión arterial de los clientes y realiza lecturas de colesterol. También es especialista en medicina natural, cuyo objetivo es prevenir enfermedades graves o reducir los efectos secundarios negativos de la medicina. La Farmacia también ofrece un servicio de entrega a domicilio y tiene la intención de lanzar un Sistema de Dosificación Personalizada mediante el cual los clientes pueden recibir su medicamento cuidadosamente personalizado en una caja segmentada para permitirle al paciente ver si se ha tomado o no el medicamento de ese día.
Es realmente encantador dar la bienvenida al barrio a nuevos empresarios, sobre todo cuando llevan la larga tradición de cuidado y amabilidad que tanto personifica a La Guindalera. ¡Bienvenidos!
