“I’m convinced that music has loads of benefits. Lots of studies have shown that it impacts the the development of children — including when they are in the uterus — and those who study music tend to do better at school than those who don’t,” Mercedes of music school Cavatina tells me. Situated on calle Antonia Ruiz Soro, the centre was opened in 2005 and caters to all ages and abilities. Mercedes herself is a trained singer and was keen to transmit her love of music to others by opening her own school, with a big focus on how the discipline can help with some physical and mental problems. “We’ve had people in the school with paralysis and children with developmental issues, and we’ve had great results,” she tells me.
Mercedes is now keen to focus more on online teaching, with after-school activities for kids, lessons for aspiring music teachers and tips for parents to help their children incorporate music into their lives for myriad benefits. While generally focused on singing, guitar and piano lessons, the centre has taught the trumpet, saxophone and even the accordion in the past, generally adapting to the desires of their students. Although not from Guindalera herself, Mercedes brother-in-law introduced her to the barrio and she immediately warmed to its tranquil vibe and was delighted to found her school here. And the vecinos are delighted that she has brought music into their lives!
“Estoy convencido de que la música tiene muchos beneficios. Muchos estudios han demostrado que afecta el desarrollo de los niños, incluso cuando están en el útero, y los que estudian música tienden a tener mejores resultados en la escuela que los que no lo hacen", me dice Mercedes, de la escuela de música Cavatina. Situado en la calle Antonia Ruiz Soro, el centro fue inaugurado en 2005 y está dirigido a todas las edades y capacidades. La propia Mercedes es una cantante entrenada y estaba dispuesta a transmitir su amor por la música a los demás abriendo su propia escuela, con un gran enfoque en cómo la disciplina puede ayudar con algunos problemas físicos y mentales. "Hemos tenido personas en la escuela con parálisis y niños con problemas de desarrollo, y hemos tenido excelentes resultados", me dice.
Mercedes ahora desea enfocarse más en la enseñanza on-line, con actividades extra-escolares para niños, ayuda con las oposiciones para profesores de música y consejos para que los padres ayuden a sus hijos a incorporar la música en sus vidas para obtener innumerables beneficios. Aunque generalmente se enfoca en lecciones de canto, guitarra y piano, el centro ha enseñado trompetas, saxofón e incluso acordeón en el pasado, adaptándose generalmente a los deseos de sus alumnos. Aunque no es de la Guindalera, el cuñado de Mercedes la presentó al barrio y ella inmediatamente se enamoró de su ambiente tranquilo y estaba encantada de fundar su escuela aquí. ¡Y los vecinos están encantados de que ella haya traído la música a sus vidas!
