Stepping into the paired-back, beautiful workshop of Studio Squina seems to fire one’s creativity straightaway. The sound of tapping on metal, the hiss of the gas-fired flames and the murmur of excited voices as new shapes are formed, spark curiosity in what unique piece of jewellery is being made. This creative hub was set up over five years ago by Sandra and Jimena, who wanted to offer personalised classes for people keen on creating beautiful pieces without having to spend years in formal training. “When we first set it up, it was mainly our own workshop, but then we started giving more and more classes and it’s grown from there,” says Sandra. “We offer courses of different lengths to everyone from beginners to those wishing to improve their technique. And we often invite teachers to come and share their wisdom here, since we like to offer a variety of disciplines, from metal work, glass-blowing and ceramic work too.”
And the courses have garnered interest from people all over the world. Before the pandemic struck, Studio Squina had students from Latin America, the US and even from Australia. Recently, their students have tended to come from Europe or just from within Spain - especially as their workshop is so unique in Madrid. Sandra elaborates: “there are quite a few workshops like this in Barcelona and a few others in Madrid. But elsewhere in Spain there aren’t any, so we get lots of students from Galicia, Valencia and other places around Spain who want to experience jewellery-making”.
Some of Studio Squina’s clients signed up casually for one course and have ended up coming back for more, such is the rewarding experience of creating unique, personalised pieces at the workshop. “Students are generally really grateful for the overall experience - it’s a very personalised way of working, since the classes are small, we have time to dedicate lots of hours to each student to help them with their design and the techniques. People notice the high quality of training that we offer. And it's a really relaxed atmosphere. We like to make our students feel at home, to make them feel as though it was their own workshop,” Sandra says.
Myriad studies have shown the mental health benefits of creativity and Sandra points out that her clients are “amazed by the results” of their courses. She says that the experience is very meditative, the repetitive movements help create tranquility and the gratifying feeling of making something with your own hands is a wonderful, lasting experience. Entrar en el hermoso taller minimalista de Studio Squina parece disparar la creatividad de uno de inmediato. El sonido de los golpes en el metal, el silbido de las llamas de gas y el murmullo de voces emocionadas a medida que se crean nuevas formas despiertan la curiosidad sobre qué pieza de joyería única se está fabricando. Este centro creativo fue montado hace más de cinco años por Sandra y Jimena, quienes querían ofrecer clases personalizadas para personas interesadas en hacer hermosas piezas sin tener que pasar años en una formación formal. “Cuando lo montamos por primera vez, era principalmente nuestro propio taller, pero luego empezamos a dar más y más clases y ha ido creciendo a partir de ahí”, dice Sandra. “Ofrecemos cursos de diferentes duraciones para todos, desde principiantes hasta aquellos que deseen mejorar su técnica. Y a menudo invitamos a los maestros a que vengan y compartan su sabiduría aquí, ya que nos gusta ofrecer una variedad de disciplinas, desde trabajo en metal, soplado de vidrio y trabajo de cerámica también.“
Y los cursos han despertado el interés de personas de todo el mundo. Antes de que empezó la pandemia, Studio Squina tenía estudiantes de América Latina, Estados Unidos e incluso de Australia. Recientemente, sus estudiantes han tendido a provenir de Europa o simplemente de España, especialmente porque su taller es tan único en país. Sandra explica: “hay bastantes talleres como este en Barcelona y algunos más en Madrid. Pero en el resto de España no hay ninguno, por lo que tenemos muchos estudiantes de Galicia, Valencia y otros lugares de España que quieren experimentar la fabricación de joyas”.
Algunos de los clientes de Studio Squina se inscribieron casualmente en un curso y terminaron regresando por más, tal es la gratificante experiencia de crear piezas únicas y personalizadas en el taller. “Los estudiantes generalmente están muy agradecidos por la experiencia en general; es una forma de trabajo muy personalizada, dado que las clases son pequeñas, tenemos tiempo para dedicar muchas horas a cada estudiante para ayudarlos con su diseño y las técnicas. La gente nota la alta calidad de la formación que ofrecemos. Y es un ambiente realmente relajado. Nos gusta hacer que nuestros alumnos se sientan como en casa, que se sientan como si fuera su propio taller”, dice Sandra.
Numerosos estudios han demostrado los beneficios para la salud mental de la creatividad y Sandra señala que sus clientes están "asombrados por los resultados" de sus cursos. Ella dice que la experiencia es muy meditativa, los movimientos repetitivos ayudan a crear tranquilidad y la gratificante sensación de hacer algo con tus propias manos es una experiencia maravillosa y duradera.
