“Guindalera has SO much potential,” Felipe tells me from his gorgeously-designed studio on c/Cartegena. “Just c/Bejar, for example, that is now pedestrianised, I can imagine being filled with art galleries, restaurants and trendy shops. It reminds me a lot of the barrios in my home city of Porto, which have become focal points for artists there.” Felipe has been in Spain for several years now, having previously lived and worked in Rotterdam. His studio is a calm oasis from the busy street outside, with an airy feel and beautiful wooden detailing throughout. As he points out, wood is a renewable resource and sustainability is one of his main buzzwords. It’s crucial in his work - from the techniques used in his interior design or architecture through to the finishing touches. He’s also keen that old skills aren’t lost. “It’s important to work with local carpenters, brick-layers and other tradespeople so that we keep the old traditions alive. Madrid and Barcelona have very different architectural styles and ways of constructing, so this historical heritage needs to be preserved and taught to the next generation.”
Soul & Habitat have worked on various projects, from renovating business premises to constructing houses from scratch. They’re also working on an old people’s home in Portugal. Felipe thinks that one of the things that sets them apart is that their office is easily accessible and they are keen to find out what their clients need, what problems they have and work together for the best solution. “The details are so important,” Felipe says. “We always follow through and make sure everything is perfect and that the client is happy.” He also thinks that the pandemic and resultant lockdowns have encouraged Spaniards to focus more on their apartments and make them more homely. “People need light, airy homes with well insulated windows and walls to create a tranquil ambience and also to save on heating costs.” And as to a wider vision, Felipe can’t stress enough the importance of greenery in our surroundings. “Cities are transformed with nature. Without nature they are inhumane places. And it doesn’t cost much to plant more trees on the streets, yet they bring so many benefits to our wellbeing that it really should be a priority.”
“Guindalera tiene mucho potencial”, me dice Felipe desde su estudio de muy estiloso en c / Cartagena. “Justo c/Béjar, por ejemplo, que ahora es peatonal, me imagino lleno de galerías de arte, restaurantes y tiendas de moda. Me recuerda mucho a los barrios de mi ciudad natal de Oporto, que se han convertido en puntos focales para los artistas allí ”. Felipe lleva varios años en España, habiendo vivido y trabajado anteriormente en Rotterdam. Su estudio es un oasis de tranquilidad desde la ruidosa calle exterior, con una sensación de amplitud y hermosos detalles de madera en todas partes. Como señala, la madera es un recurso renovable y la sostenibilidad es una de sus palabras claves. Es crucial en su trabajo, desde las técnicas utilizadas en su diseño de interiores o arquitectura hasta los toques finales. También está interesado en que las viejas habilidades no se pierdan. “Es importante trabajar con carpinteros, albañiles y otros comerciantes locales para mantener vivas las viejas tradiciones. Madrid y Barcelona tienen estilos arquitectónicos y formas de construcción muy diferentes, por lo que este patrimonio histórico debe ser preservado y enseñado a la próxima generación ”.
Soul & Habitat ha trabajado en diversos proyectos, desde la renovación de locales comerciales hasta la construcción de viviendas desde cero. También están trabajando en una residencia de mayores en Portugal. Felipe piensa que una de las cosas que los distingue es que su oficina es de fácil acceso y están atentos a las necesidades de sus clientes, qué problemas tienen y trabajar juntos para encontrar la mejor solución. “Los detalles son muy importantes”, dice Felipe. "Siempre cumplimos y nos aseguramos de que todo sea perfecto y de que el cliente esté contento". También cree que la pandemia y los confinamientos resultantes han animado a los españoles a centrarse más en sus apartamentos y hacerlos más hogareños. "La gente necesita hogares luminosos y ventilados con ventanas y paredes bien aisladas para crear un ambiente tranquilo y también para ahorrar en costos de calefacción". Y en cuanto a una visión más amplia, Felipe no puede enfatizar lo suficiente la importancia de la vegetación en nuestro entorno. “Las ciudades se transforman con la naturaleza. Sin naturaleza son lugares inhumanos. Y no cuesta mucho plantar más árboles en las calles, sin embargo, aportan tantos beneficios a nuestro bienestar que realmente debería ser una prioridad ".
