“I’ve always lived in this barrio, I love it!” Tere from Martínez Alimentación on Calle Bejár tells me. She and husband Pepe have worked together in the shop since 2001, although Tere’s connection with the place goes back longer as her Dad opened it in 1960 and she helped him out until his retirement. Originally just a fruit and vegetable vendor, the store has expanded over the years to included most food stuffs, including organic meat and Asturian produce such as chorizo and morcilla.
Tere tells me how she loves getting to know people of all different ages, who come into the store. “There’s an old lady that comes into the shop who claims she remembers my Dad in short trousers!” She laughs. There was concern that the Lidl supermarket which opened up a few blocks away would affect their business but thankfully this hasn’t been the case. “People want quality and they know they’ll get it here,” she tells me, explaining how she gets up at 4am to visit the MercaMadrid wholesaler to select the fruit and vegetables herself. Her memory then takes her back to what used to be in the spot where Lidl is now: a cinema called Marvi which opened in 1959 until the late 1980s after which it became a bingo hall with a dance club called the Black Swan incorporated alongside it. Guindalera has seen its fair share of changes over the years, but it’s great to know that long-running businesses like Martínez are still going strong.

Tere me cuenta cómo le encanta conocer a personas de todas las edades que entran en la tienda. "¡Hay una anciana que entra en la tienda y dice que recuerda a mi papá con pantalones cortos!" Ella ríe. Existía la preocupación de que el supermercado Lidl, que se abrió a unos metros de distancia, afectaría su negocio, pero afortunadamente este no ha sido el caso. “La gente quiere calidad y saben que la conseguirán aquí”, me dice, y me explica cómo se levanta a las 4 de la mañana para visitar al MercaMadrid y seleccionar ella misma la fruta y verdura. Su memoria la lleva de regreso a lo que solía estar en el lugar donde está ahora Lidl: un cine llamado Marvi que abrió en 1959 hasta finales de la década de 1980, después de lo cual se convirtió en una sala de bingo con un club de baile llamado Black Swan incorporado junto a él. Guindalera ha experimentado una buena cantidad de cambios a lo largo de los años, pero es bueno saber que empresas de larga duración como Martínez aún se mantienen fuertes.
