Local Heroes: Gonzalo & Alvaro

During the long sad days of 2020's lockdown in Madrid, one thing that kept people’s spirits up was the daily 8pm clap that gave thanks to all the healthcare workers. And in La Guindalera this daily event was also livened up by the songs and messages broadcast from one particular flat: that of brothers Gonzalo and Alvaro. Both in their twenties, they were inspired to set up their guitar amplifier to broadcast entertainment to neighbours after having seen video clips on social media of other altruistic performers in Spain. Gonzalo admits to me that he and his mum were concerned that people could be annoyed by the frequent music but were soon reassured that they’d made the right decision when they saw how enthusiastically their efforts were received. Meanwhile Alvaro and his dad were more confident about the project and it was their dad in particular who pointed out that the song choice should be varied, to appeal to all generations.

They set up a specific email address which they broadcast regularly so that they could receive requests for songs, birthday messages and other suggestions — and were soon bombarded with words of thanks as well as song choices. And their innovation didn’t stop there. One day Gonzalo even played the bagpipes to the tune of ‘I Will Survive’ out of his window, to tremendous applause. The response to their effort was humbling, with frequent messages reading “Although I hardly leave the house these days, just hearing you across the street makes me smile.” And bearing in mind how hard it was for Spanish children to not be allowed out at all, Gonzalo and Alvaro frequently tried to focus their attentions on the littlest neighbours with children’s songs and games: “We wanted to convey how well they were behaving and that we had their backs.” The brothers say that the positive response filled them with happiness and gave them the impetus to keep going, knowing that they were giving people, especially the isolated elderly, a ray of light 15 minutes every day. The brothers are keen to transmit their gratitude to their neighbours “we’re so enormously grateful for the support we received from our neighbours, who would greet us every day from their windows, and to all those who took the time to write to us.”

Durante los largos y tristes días del confinamiento a principios del año 2020 en Madrid, una cosa que animó a la gente fue el aplauso diario de las 8 de la tarde que daba gracias a todos los trabajadores sanitarios. Y en La Guindalera este acontecimiento cotidiano también se amenizó con los cantos y mensajes transmitidos desde un piso en particular: el de los hermanos Gonzalo y Álvaro. Ambos, veinteañeros, se inspiraron a montar su amplificador de guitarra para transmitir entretenimiento a los vecinos después de haber visto videoclips en las redes sociales de otros artistas altruistas en España. Gonzalo me admite que él y su madre estaban preocupados de que la gente pudiera molestarse con la música, pero pronto se sintieron tranquilos de que habían tomado la decisión correcta cuando vieron con qué entusiasmo se recibieron sus esfuerzos. Mientras tanto, Álvaro y su papá tenían más confianza en el proyecto y fue su papá en particular quien señaló que la elección de la canción debe ser variada, para atraer a todas las generaciones.

Establecieron una dirección de correo electrónico específica que transmitían con regularidad para poder recibir solicitudes de canciones, mensajes de cumpleaños y otras sugerencias, y pronto fueron bombardeados con palabras de agradecimiento y opciones de canciones. Y su innovación no se detuvo allí. Un día Gonzalo incluso tocó la gaita con la melodía de 'Resistiré' fuera de su ventana, con tremendos aplausos. La respuesta a su esfuerzo fue humillante, con frecuentes mensajes como: ”Nos decían que, aunque algunos días no salían, nos oían desde casa y les sacábamos una sonrisa". Y teniendo en cuenta lo difícil que era para los niños españoles que no se les permitiera salir, Gonzalo y Álvaro intentaban con frecuencia centrar su atención en los vecinos más pequeños con canciones y juegos infantiles: “Llegamos a hacer juegos y poner canciones para los más pequeños del barrio, porque son los que más podían sufrir en casa, y se portaron fenomenal y también les queríamos demostrar que contábamos con ellos". Los hermanos dicen que la respuesta positiva los llenó de alegría y les dio el ímpetu para seguir adelante, sabiendo que le estaban dando a las personas, especialmente a los ancianos aislados, un rayo de luz 15 minutos todos los días. Los hermanos están deseosos de transmitir su agradecimiento a sus vecinos: “Queremos terminar, agradeciendo enormemente el apoyo de todos los vecinos que nos reuníamos en las ventanas todos los días y en especial a los que quisieron formar parte de esta iniciativa escribiendo un correo."
