“We feel so incredibly grateful to our clients who have supported us since the lockdown,” Feli tells me from the book-brimmed surroundings of Librería Polifemo. “We may not have survived as a business if it wasn’t for all the locals popping in on a regular basis to buy books.” Shutting shop would have been a horrible loss to the barrio, not only because of the great range of tomes the store has to offer (especially related to Spanish and Latin American history) but also because of its history in Guindalera. The shop has been in existence for 52 years — it was originally called Oxford Libreria as the then owner had studied at Oxford University in the UK. When he retired in 1980, Feli, who had worked in the shop from a young age, took over the store and re-named it Librería Polifemo. She had intended to celebrate its 40th anniversary this year but the pandemic but a halt to proceedings. “Maybe next year!” She tells me. “We’ll call it the 40 plus 1 party!”
Regarding the barrio of Guindalera, Feli recalls how the area around c/Jose Camilo Cela used to be vegetable plots and gardens and what a ‘village-like’ feel the neighbourhood has. Feli and Camino, who also works in the shop, love walking everywhere from the barrio — whether it’s to the Retiro or Sol. They were pleased to see that walking has become a much more common past time since the lockdown amongst Madrileños and that their shop was discovered by people who live just a few kilometres away. “We got an unexpected boost from people who stumbled across us on their daily walks,” Feli tells me. A proud proponent of supporting local commerce, she says it’s not just book sellers who feel supported by the locals but other shopkeepers have mentioned to her how grateful they are for the local back-up. “Nos sentimos increíblemente agradecidos con nuestros clientes que nos han apoyado durante el confinamiento”, me dice Feli desde la Librería Polifemo. “Es posible que no hubiéramos sobrevivido como negocio si no fuera por todos los vecinos que vienen regularmente para comprar libros”. Cerrar la tienda hubiera sido una pérdida horrible para el barrio, no solo por la gran variedad de tomos que la tienda tiene para ofrecer (especialmente relacionados con la historia de España y América Latina) sino también por su historia en Guindalera. Con respecto al barrio de Guindalera, Feli recuerda cómo el área alrededor de c/José Camilo Cela solía ser huertas y qué aire "pueblerino" tiene el barrio. A Feli y Camino, que también trabaja en la tienda, les encanta caminar a todas partes desde el vecindario, ya sea al Retiro o al Sol. Les complació ver que caminar se ha convertido en un pasatiempo mucho más común desde el encierro entre los madrileños y que su tienda fue descubierta por personas que viven a pocos kilómetros de distancia. “Recibimos un impulso inesperado de la gente que se tropezaba con nosotros en sus caminatas diarias”, me dice Feli. Como defensora orgullosa del apoyo al comercio local, dice que no solo los vendedores de libros se sienten apoyados por los lugareños, sino que otros comerciantes le han mencionado lo agradecidos que están por el respaldo local.
