Maria describes her relationship with La Guindalera as being boomerang-like. “I was born here and for the first two years of my life I lived with my parents in my grandparents’ house. Then we’d always go back and visit them once we’d moved out, making for some amazing memories from my childhood.” Just in the past year she has moved back to the barrio of her birth and raves about “the abundance of greenery, the cool shade in the summer and the cute little shops and market.”
Maria works as a GP in Prosperidad but also finds the time to write. “Writing and reading has been my passion since I was a young girl.” The Famous Five was one of the first books she read but she also remembers magical moments in her grandparents’ house, where her great-grandmother would tell her incredible stories which she’d beg to hear again and again. A wonderful oral tradition that she has carried on in the publication of her book of poetry: Haikus Desde El Balcón.
The book is composed of Haikus that describe the fear, the loneliness and the exhaustion that Maria and lots of her co-health workers suffered as well as the day-to-day life of the majority of Madrid’s residents as they coped with their long confinement. The idea itself arose after Maria found an abandoned (or lost) folder in the countryside in 2019. It was full of old cuttings about literature. “Amongst them was a fascinating article about Jack Kerouac’s Haikus with their concepts of an unfettered, simple look at the reality of the moment.” Combining these beautiful snippets of poetry with photos that she took during the spring of 2020 makes for a remarkable momento from a very difficult year. “They say I’ve written Haikus against the pandemic and it just may be the case.” A percentage of proceeds will go to the Banco de Alimentos de Madrid and the World Health Organisation for the equitable distribution of the COVID vaccine.
María describe su relación con La Guindalera como una especie de boomerang. “Nací aquí y viví casi mis dos primeros años en casa de mis abuelos con ms padres, en el barrio moderno, y regresaba a visitarlos con recuerdos increíbles de la infancia". Apenas el año pasado se mudó de nuevo al barrio de su nacimiento y elogia “el verde abundante, la sombra fresca en verano y el sabor de las cosas de siempre, su mercado, las pequeñas tiendas, mucha artesanía, la librería Polifemo”.
María trabaja como médico de cabecera en Prosperidad pero también encuentra tiempo para escribir. "Leer y escribir desde niña, mi afición, o pasión. De hecho recuerdo mi primer libro leído sobre Los Cinco".También recuerda momentos mágicos en la casa de sus abuelos, donde “mi bisabuela contándome siempre esas historias de la que no me cansaba.” Una maravillosa tradición oral que ha continuado en la publicación de su libro de poesía: Haikus Desde El Balcón.
El libro está compuesto por Haikus que describen el miedo, la soledad y el cansancio que sufrieron María y muchos de sus compañeros en los centros de salud y hospitales, así como el día a día de la mayoría de los madrileños que afrontaron su largo encierro. La idea en sí surgió después de que María encontró una carpeta abandonada (o perdida) en el campo en 2019. Estaba llena de viejos recortes sobre literatura. "Entre ellos, un artículo que me fascinó sobre los Haikus de Jack Kerouac con su concepción sobre la mirada libre y sencilla de la realidad cercana". La combinación de estos hermosos fragmentos de poesía con las fotos que tomó durante la primavera de 2020 lo convierte en un momento notable de un año muy difícil. "Dicen que he escrito Haikus contra la pandemia y puede que sea así". Un porcentaje de los ingresos se destinará al Banco de Alimentos de Madrid y a la Organización Mundial de la Salud para la distribución equitativa de la vacuna COVID.
