This haven of fresh flowers and plants was opened in 2018 by mother and son team, Susana and Ivan. The pair were blown away by the friendliness and kindness of the local residents who came by to introduce themselves and welcome them to the barrio during their first weeks of business. When the lockdown was enforced on March 12, the florists were taken by surprise and didn’t want to throw their stock of flowers and foliage away - so they gifted bouquets to the health workers and patients at the Hospital Gregorio Marañón. Little did they realise that their own father and grandfather would end up in the same hospital fighting for his life just a short time later. Luckily he survived the virus and was treated really well at the hospital, who threw him a birthday party and let him speak regularly with his family.
Ivan tells me how frustrating it is that cut flowers are so expensive in Spain and one of the reasons is the monopoly that the Netherlands has over the flower trade. Roses grown in Soria, Spain, for example, are shipped to the Netherlands, to the Royal FloraHolland auction house at Aalsmeer before being shipped back to Spain. This results in a huge carbon footprint on top of extra expense and the quality of the flowers are impacted by their unnecessarily long journey. Obviously not all flowers can be grown all year round in Spain, and some have to be imported but it seems a shame that the national market can’t be taken advantage of better.
Este remanso de flores recién cortados y plantas de todo tipo fue inaugurado en 2018 por el equipo de madre y hijo, Susana y Iván. La pareja se quedó impresionado por la amabilidad y calidez de la gente del barrio, quienes vinieron a saludarles y darles el bienvenido al barrio desde el principio. Cuando empezó el confinamiento el día 12 de marzo, no sabía qué hacer con todas las flores que tenían en la tienda, con lo cual les daban todo al Hospital Gregorio Marañón. Poco sabían ellos que su propio padre/abuelo iba a estar en el mismo hospital dentro de poco, luchando por su vida. Afortunadamente superó el virus y le trataron súper bien en el hospital, celebrando su cumple con una fiesta y dejándole hablar frecuentemente con su familia.
Me comenta Iván que le frustra mucho el precio elevado de las flores aquí en España y me explica que la culpa viene de la monopolio que tiene los Países Bajos. Rosas cultivados en Soria, España, por ejemplo, están exportados a Royal FloraHolland casa de subastas en Aalsmeer, cerca a Amsterdam, antes de estar importados otro vez a España. La huella de carbono es enorme, más el precio elevado y la calidad de flores también está impactado por su viaje tan largo y innecesario. Obviamente no todas las flores pueden estar cultivados aquí en España durante todo el año y algunas sí tiene que ser importadas pero es una lástima que el mercado nacional no podría ser aprovechado mejor.
