“My father opened this pharmacy in 1967 as the barrio was being constructed. The licence for each pharmacist was allotted via a draw and the pharmacies were spread out equally amongst the growing barrio.” Carmen opens up to me about the history of her business from her perfectly situated spot on the corner of calles Brescia and Biarritz. She also tells me that her daughter is studying to be a pharmacist too! As to the services they offer the local vecinos: “we find out what the patient/client wants and needs and if we don’t have it in stock, then we endeavour to get it for them as quickly as possible.” They also started a WhatsApp ordering system a while ago, so that customers can either head to the pharmacist for their medicine or also get it delivered to home. This latter option only became a legal possibility during the 2020 pandemic, a period that Carmen describes as “a very hard few months.”
During more normal years, tourists are frequent visitors to the pharmacy as the NH Ventas hotel is just a few metres away down c/Biarritz. And fortunately languages aren’t a problem for Carmen or her team of Patricia, Arancha and Juan, who all speak English and some French. And as to La Guindalera, Carmen says: “I’ve lived all my life in the barrio, what am I going to say? I love it! It’s like a village, everyone knows each other. It’s great.”
“Mi padre abrió esta farmacia en 1967 mientras se construía el barrio. La licencia para cada farmacéutico se asignó mediante un sorteo y las farmacias se distribuyeron equitativamente entre el barrio.” Carmen me cuenta la historia de su negocio desde su lugar perfectamente ubicado en la esquina de las calles Brescia y Biarritz. ¡Y me dice que su hija también está estudiando farmacéutica! En cuanto a los servicios que ofrecen a los vecinos locales: “averiguamos lo que el paciente/cliente quiere y necesita y si no lo tenemos en stock, nos esforzamos por conseguirlo lo más rápido posible”. También iniciaron un sistema de pedidos de WhatsApp hace un tiempo, para que los clientes puedan dirigirse a la farmacia por su medicamento o también recibirlo en casa. Esta última opción solo se convirtió en una opción legal durante la pandemia de 2020, que fueron “unos meses muy duros”, como dice Carmen.
Durante años más normales, los turistas son frecuentes visitantes a la farmacia ya que el hotel NH Ventas se encuentra a escasos metros por c/Biarritz. Y afortunadamente los idiomas no son un problema para Carmen o su equipo de Patricia, Arancha y Juan, que hablan inglés y algo de francés. Y sobre La Guindalera, Carmen dice: “He vivido toda mi vida en el barrio, ¿qué te voy a decir? ¡Me encanta! Es como un pueblo, todos se conocen. Es genial."
