“When I was a boy, we’d have flamenco singers up here at the bar, improvising songs until 5am, it was another world!” Sergio tells me from the cute corner bar at Casa Sierra, decorated with bull-fighting photos and memorabilia. In a few years time he’d been hoping to celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the opening of the bar, which dates back to 1925 but he fears that, like lots of other businesses, his days are numbered. While the pandemic is making bar visits more complicated generally, Sergio has also noticed a change in young people’s habits, saying that they tend to order from delivery companies rather than eat out. He has recently applied for a terrace license in the hope of encouraging more custom and having outside space would certainly make it even more of a perfect stop for a tapa or two.
Sergio grew up in La Guindalera and remembers the bar being surrounded by fields when it was first opened, often kicking a football around the adjoining streets with his friends. And talking of football, Sergio’s son Raúl, who also works in Casa Sierra, is named after former Real Madrid star Raúl González Blanco. The footballer himself has frequented the bar and his framed photo, alongside his young namesake, adorns one its walls. Let’s hope all of this history isn’t lost and Casa Sierra manages to celebrate its 100th anniversary in the near future.
“Cuando era niño había cantantes de flamenco aquí en bar, improvisando hasta las cinco de la mañana, era otro mundo!” Me comenta Sergio desde la acogedora taberna taurina de Casa Sierra en la esquina de la Calle de Villafranca. En unos años tenía previsto celebrar los 100 años del bar, que estuvo fundado en 1925 pero el tema que, como muchos otros negocios, sus días están contados. La pandemia se está complicando la vida para muchos pero Sergio ha notado también que los jóvenes han cambiado sus hábitos y prefieren pedir comida rápida en vez de comer fuera. Ha pedido licencia para una terraza con la esperanza de atraer más gente y es cierto que será un lugar perfecto para tomar una tapa o dos.
Sergio creció en La Guindalera y se acuerda que cuando se abrió el bar estuvo situado en el medio de campos. Solía jugar fútbol con los chicos de su edad por los alrededores. Y hablando de fútbol, su hijo Raúl quien trabaja en Casa Sierra también, lleva el nombre del antiguo jugador de Real Madrid Raúl González Blanco. El futbolista venía a la taberna y hay una foto de él con su homónimo en la pared del bar. Esperamos que la historia de Casa Sierra no se pierda y que consigan celebrar su 100 años dentro de poco.
